History

ESPRit, the European Society for Periodical Research, was founded in 2009 by a group of periodical researchers from Austria, Belgium, England, the Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden, and the United States.

Bringing together scholars from different national and academic backgrounds, the society emerged in response to the growing need for an international forum dedicated to the study of periodicals.

The aim of the organization is to unite the resources, expertise, and methodologies of individual scholars from various disciplines who work with periodicals, fostering dialogue and collaboration across languages and disciplines. By encouraging the exchange of ideas and research practices, ESPRit seeks to promote the study of periodicals as a crucial field within the humanities and social sciences, supporting both established and emerging researchers through conferences, networks, and collaborative projects.

The individual memorials of the initiators and active members offer insight into the origins of ESPRit.

Today, the Society is sustained by its founding members and patrons, whose financial support underpins its ongoing initiatives and future development.
