Periodicals as Cultural Assemblages

The 13th ESPRit Conference, Periodicals as Cultural Assemblages, took place at the Universidad de Málaga from 3 to 5 September 2025. It approached periodicals as dynamic forms assembled through texts, images, material features, editorial practices, readers and networks. The theme invited participants to examine how these elements come together, change over time and connect publications with wider cultural and social worlds.
A postgraduate workshop opened the programme on 3 September. Its presentations explored a range of approaches to periodical research, including visual analysis, digital methods, emotions, illness writing, editorial practices and transmedial perspectives. The main conference followed on 4 and 5 September, with parallel sessions on cultural and visual assemblages, feminist and political periodicals, translation, technology, readership, and the circulation of print across places and periods.
Two plenary lectures developed the conference theme from different perspectives:
