The Edinburgh History of the Transnational British Press in Non-Anglophone Countries, 1800–1914

This landmark volume offers the first comprehensive history of the English-language press published in non-Anglophone countries during the long nineteenth century. Bringing together twenty-five original essays by an international team of scholars, it examines newspapers and periodicals produced across Europe, the Levant, the Mediterranean, Asia and Latin America, highlighting their role in the circulation of ideas, journalistic models and cultural identities across borders.

Rather than approaching these publications solely as expressions of British influence abroad, the volume investigates them as products of complex transnational exchanges. Particular attention is paid to the mobility of editors and journalists, the intercultural competencies that shaped editorial practices, and how English-language newspapers mediated between expatriate communities and their host societies. In doing so, the collection broadens our understanding of nineteenth-century media cultures and contributes significantly to the growing field of transnational periodical studies.

The volume was presented as part of ESPRit's New Research in Periodical Studies online event series. During the discussion, the editors introduced the project and reflected on its interdisciplinary approach, emphasising how the study of English-language newspapers published outside the Anglophone world reshapes established narratives of British press history and foregrounds the importance of circulation, networks and global media connections.
